The Evaluation Process at Oceanside Evaluations
When you choose Oceanside Evaluations, you're getting more than a test score. Our licensed psychologists invest 13–17 hours per evaluation — from intake through your final report — to give you a complete, clinically accurate picture of how your child learns, thinks, and navigates the world.
What Makes OSE Different
We are not limited by insurance. Most health insurance companies restrict psychological, psychoeducational, and neuropsychological testing to a single yes-or-no question. That's not enough. OSE operates on a private-pay model (with the exception of Tricare) so our clinicians — not an insurance company — determine what testing your child actually needs.
Still not sure if you need an evaluation? Private-pay clients can schedule a free 10-minute phone consultation with one of our doctors to talk through concerns and find the right path forward.
Insurance reimbursement is often available. More than 80% of private-pay clients are reimbursed by their insurance provider for at least a portion of testing costs through a superbill. We'll provide everything you need to submit.
Step-by-Step: How Our Evaluations Work
1. Getting Started All clients must complete the medical forms and background information prior to the Intake Session. There is usually at least one rating scale sent before the Intake Session as well. This helps ensure that we can ask the necessary questions at the Intake Session.
2. Intake Session All clients begin with a 40-minute clinical interview. We review background history, discuss your specific concerns, and confirm the right evaluation approach for your child or yourself.
3. Testing Day Assessments are conducted in person and built specifically for you — not selected from a pre-approved insurance checklist. We aim to complete all testing in a single day (sessions range from 2–5 hours depending on scope) to minimize time away from school or work. If something unexpected surfaces during testing, we can adjust in real time to follow up on new questions — something insurance-based testing simply doesn't allow. If testing cannot be completed in one session, another day will be added.
4. Rating Scales & Questionnaires To understand your child across all settings, we send norm-referenced surveys to parents, teachers, coaches, and other important people in their life. This data gives us a statistically grounded view of your child beyond the testing room.
5. Scoring, Interpretation & Peer Review After testing, our team scores every measure, reviews all documentation, and interprets results in the context of your child's full history. Every report goes through an internal peer-review process before you receive it.
6. Feedback Session You'll meet with your evaluator for a 40-minute feedback session to walk through findings and ask questions (included in most evaluations).
7. Your Full Written Report You receive a comprehensive report detailing your child's strengths, challenges, diagnoses (when applicable), and specific recommendations — written in clear language you can share with schools, therapists, specialists, or anyone on your child's team.
A Few Important Details
Diagnoses: OSE is licensed to provide diagnoses — not all psychologists are. A diagnosis is not required but is needed to generate a superbill for insurance reimbursement.
Tricare clients: An intake appointment is required to determine medical necessity. Additional services not covered by Tricare (such as educational testing) may be added on separately.
We're on your team: Follow-up support is available after your evaluation as needed.
_____________
CUSTODY NOTE: For minors not living with both parents 100% of the time, both custodial parents must sign consent forms and be given the opportunity to complete background information and rating scales — unless sole custody or sole medical custody is documented, or only one parent is listed on the birth certificate. OSE is not responsible for consequences arising from incomplete or inaccurate custody information provided to our office.
