Neuropsychological Evaluation

  • Ages 5.5 to 45

  • Intake, 2 to 4 testing sessions, Feedback, and Report with diagnosis and recommendations

Neuropsychological evaluations are some of the most versatile assessments offered at Oceanside Evaluations. They allow psychologists to do a deep dive and fully understand a person’s strengths, aptitudes, and areas of struggle. They are extremely beneficial for those who struggle to achieve their desired results from therapy alone, and they offer extraordinary insight into the mind’s full range of functioning for those who are having difficulties in any aspect of their lives. You can learn more about neuropsychological evaluations on this page or by contacting the Oceanside Evaluations team

This assessment is really helpful when we're not sure what's going on or where to begin. It's also useful if there is a change in the person’s functioning, if there has been a head injury, or if there are prenatal vulnerabilities. Sometimes, we may feel that previous assessments may have missed something, and we need a better understanding with more information. This tool can help us find that missing piece. Another reason for a Neuropsychological Evaluation is if a person has a learning challenge but interventions are not helping, this tool can help us understand what's going on better.

Who Should Receive Neuropsychological Assessment?

The Oceanside Evaluations team offers neuropsychological assessments for people from the age of five up to 45. These evaluations are helpful for individuals who struggle at home, school, work, or socially but don’t know where to begin seeking support. Neuropsychological assessment helps people understand the origins of many emotional, cognitive, and behavioral challenges. It’s especially beneficial if a person has a traumatic brain injury (TBI), seizure disorder, significant change in function, tumors or other medical diagnoses, or prenatal exposure to certain toxins or chemicals. Others may undergo a neuropsychological assessment if previous assessments have produced results that aren’t clear or helpful. This form of assessment may also be recommended to find an answer to specific referral questions from physicians, therapists, or other providers. Finally, an individual may request a neuropsychological evaluation if they are having ambiguous difficulties with attentiveness, memory, processing, problem-solving, reasoning, language, motor skills, or executive functioning.

What Happens During Neuropsychological Evaluation?

Neuropsychological evaluation is broken up into four parts:

  1. Intake – this initial session allows us to get to know you better. We’ll answer questions, ask questions, review your health and psychological history, and have you fill out rating scales. We may also ask you to have people who know you well fill out rating scales to give us additional perspective.

  2. Testing sessions – two to four sessions will take place where a comprehensive testing battery is administered to gain a complete understanding of the person’s skills and abilities as well as a deeper understanding of areas where they are struggling. Some of the neuropsychological evaluations include:

    • Sensorimotor Functions

    • Visuospatial

    • Auditory/Phonological

    • Learning and Memory

    • Executive Functions

    • Facilitators/Inhibitors:

      • Allocating and Maintaining Attention

      • Working Memory

      • Speed, Fluency, Efficiency of Processing

    • General Intellectual Functioning

    • Acquired Knowledge

      • Acculturation knowledge

      • Reading

      • Writing

      • Math

    • Social-emotional Functioning and Adaptive Behaviors

  3. Feedback – during this session, your psychologist reviews the results of evaluations, asks any follow-up questions to get the information they need before writing their report, answers any questions you have, and discusses possible support resources.

  4. Report – after your assessment is completed, a thorough report of findings will be provided for your information. It can also be used as documentation for your therapist, physician, and others who offer support and resources.
